The Viral Spiral Croissant-That Took Tiktok by Storm!

Well fall has arrived, though you wouldn’t feel it here in California with a record heatwave lasting all week! But that doesn’t deter me from fall vibes and how much I enjoy baking every year as the weather gets cooler. Today, I am featuring the viral spiral croissant.

In the ever-evolving world of culinary trends, few pastries have captured the collective imagination quite like the spiral croissant. This innovative twist on the classic French pastry has gone viral on TikTok, garnering millions of views and inspiring countless home bakers to recreate its alluring shape and flavors. But what exactly makes the spiral croissant so special, and why has it become the latest food sensation?

At first glance, the spiral croissant might appear to be just another variation of the traditional croissant. However, its unique shape and presentation set it apart. Instead of the usual crescent form, the spiral croissant features a mesmerizing, swirling pattern that’s visually striking.

The spiral croissant can also be filled with a variety of flavors, from classic chocolate to exotic fruit preserves, making it a versatile treat. This adaptability has fueled its popularity on social media, as creators experiment with different fillings and toppings, showcasing their unique spins on the pastry.

When it comes to flavor, the spiral croissant offers an exciting array of possibilities. The classic version typically features a rich, buttery taste reminiscent of traditional croissants, complemented by a filling that elevates the overall experience. Popular fillings include:

  • Chocolate Hazelnut: A nod to the beloved chocolate croissant, this filling combines creamy chocolate with the nutty crunch of hazelnuts, creating a decadent treat.
  • Matcha and White Chocolate: This contemporary twist blends earthy matcha with sweet white chocolate, offering a unique flavor combination that appeals to adventurous palates.
  • Fruit and Cream Cheese: Seasonal fruits like raspberry or strawberry or even passionfruit paired with smooth cream cheese create a tangy yet sweet filling that adds a refreshing touch.

The texture of the spiral croissant is another standout feature. Thanks to the careful folding and layering of dough, each croissant boasts a flaky exterior that gives way to a soft, airy interior. The spiral design allows for more surface area, resulting in a crunchier, more satisfying bite. As you break into the pastry, the layers cascade open, revealing luscious and creamy filling

TikTok bakers share their own inspiring takes on the pastry, but I actually visited the bakery where this sensation began: Marvel Cakes in Campbell California. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of making croissant dough, try this easy recipe using store bought croissant dough. All you have to do is make the filling, and luckily here is a great recipe to start. The only tools you’ll need are a cutting board, pizza cutter, and brush and you are good to go.

White Chocolate Orange Pastry Filling

  • 180 grams white chocolate
  • 90 grams orange juice
  • 30 grams butter (room temperature)
  • Zest of one orange
  • 1 egg, whisked

Cut the croissant dough into 1 inch strips using a pizza cutter and roll them into a pinwheel shape. Let rest for about 15 minutes before baking. You can put the pinwheels in burger molds to retain their shape. Brush with eggwash. Bake 325 for 20 minutes.  Put the white chocolate and orange juice in a glass dish and melt in the microwave for about  minute. Add the butter and orange zest and mix well. Put in a pastry bag and make a hole in each croissant. Pipe the filling into each croissant.
