A 60 Year Old Falafel Legend In the Silicon Valley

There are countless places to eat in the San Francisco Bay Area—but every so often, you come across one establishment that feels like more than just a meal. In a world of fast food, pop ups, and foodie trends, a place with history, heart, and a sense of continuity is increasingly rare. That is why Falafel’s Drive In in San Jose is such a gem.

If you find yourself anywhere between San Francisco and San Jose, Falafel’s Drive-In is one of those places worth going out of your way for. At first glance, this retro drive in is totally unassuming. It’s a classic roadside stop in the middle of Silicon Valley, surrounded by the fast pace of tech, innovation, and constant change. But step a little closer, and you’ll realize this place tells a very different story. One of tradition and family–lovingly churning out their cherished heirloom recipe the same way, day after day, for over 60 years.

Honestly, it’s their consistency that makes this special, as the sandwiches taste the same whether you eat their falafel today, or ate them in 1995, or even 1965. This is a family-run business in the truest sense. You feel it in the way you’re greeted and in the rhythm of the kitchen staff that has been there for 30 years. Their is still a quiet pride behind every sandwich served. There’s no rush to reinvent or chase trends, as this Palestinian American family has a deep level of commitment to preserve something that already works.

And then there’s the falafel. Golden and crisp on the outside, vibrant green and herbaceous on the inside, the texture is what sets these golden nuggets apart. The falafel is light and airy, never dense, with a freshness that comes through in every bite. Wrapped in warm fluffy pita and layered with cucumber and tomato salad, it’s brought to life with a generous drizzle of nutty tahini (tarator) and a hit of shatta—that vibrant red chile sauce that adds just the right amount of heat. This is Arab soul food that’s deeply satisfying.

And then, almost unexpectedly, there’s that banana shake. Thick, creamy, and just sweet enough, the shake has become just as iconic as the falafel itself. There’s something nostalgic about it, like a pairing that shouldn’t make sense, but somehow works perfectly. For many, like my husband who grew up near this place, the shake is not optional, it’s part of the ritual.

Over the years, Falafel’s Drive-In has become more than a local favorite. It’s a stop for travelers heading to the San Jose airport, a recommendation passed between friends, and even a place that visitors from the Middle East seek out—drawn by flavors that feel familiar, comforting, and true.
